Why is Makar Sankranti festival celebrated 

Makar Sankranti festival is celebrated every year in the month of January in India. Some people also call it as Makara Sankranti. Makar Sankranti festival is celebrated because it indicates the transition of our Sun into the zodiac ring of Capricorn. Capricorn is also called as Makara in India. It marks the first transition after the hibernal solstice. The importance or significance of Makar Sankranti festival is seen both as aa seasonal phenomenon and as a religious day of celebration in Indian states. the special thing about the Makar Sankranti festival as compared to other festivals like Holi, Diwali, Rakshabandhan, Eid etc is that it lies every year on the 14vth of January. this year also it is being celebrated on 14th of January 2017. The reason for Makar Sankranti festival to fall on 14 January every year is that it is actually a seasonal event in which the Sun moves into Makara.(Capricorn). One day before Makar Sankranti lies the Lohri festival. Lohri is celebrated every year on 13 January in India. The festival is celebrated by flying colorful kites in the sky. People go to the markets for buying kites. There are different colors and sizes of the kites available in the market. Makar Sankranti festival is being celebrated on 14th January only this year. But there was an exception last year as the Makar Sankranti festival was celebrated on 15 January 2017. But no such thing will happen in 2018. As the Makar Sankranti festival of 2018 is lying on 14 January 2018 only according to sources.

Makar Sankranti festival is seen as the period of prosperity and tranquility. On the eve of Makar Sankranti festival,  people take a holy bath in our sacred rivers like  Ganga, Godavari, Krishna, and theYamuna river. People in thousands and thousands of numbers gather here to have a holy bath in the holy river on the special occasion of Makar Sankranti festival. They believe that it eliminates their sins. The Makar Sankranti festival is called by different names in some places.

People make Khichdi( in local language). Khichdi is a  mixture of rice and pulses. People love to eat some delicious food preparings on Makar Sankranti festival. The foods include Chura, jaggery, dishes prepared by til namely til Patti, maska, tilgud etc. People start by puja ceremony. They put the sesame seeds into the fire. People fly kites in the afternoon and enjoy a lot. In the night, a mixture of rice and pulses is made and served to each family member.
